Brian Douglas Hubbard followed the budding art careers of his students long after they left McCoy Elementary in Carrollton.
He remembered their names and saved their best work, which he brought out for a comparison.
Mr. Hubbard, who retired after 19 years at McCoy Elementary, died Feb. 23 when he was struck by a tractor-trailer about six miles north of McAlester, Okla. He was apparently trying to flag down roadside assistance, police said. He was 55.
A celebration of Mr. Hubbard's life was March 1 at McCoy Elementary. He will be buried in Columbus, Ga., where services are pending.
'Brian spent a lot of time with students individually,' said Bill Reeder, who taught with Mr. Hubbard for 17 years. 'If they had talent, he would take them as far as their talent would take them.' Mr. Hubbard also helped students with less talent learn to express themselves through art, Mr. Reeder said.
Mr. Hubbard's former students often returned to his classroom to show him what they were doing in middle and high school.
'He never forgot their names,' Mr. Reeder said. 'Even if they'd been out four or five years ... he would go get their best artwork. He would keep it for years.
'He instilled in kids a tremendous love for art.'
Born in Rock Island, Ill., Mr. Hubbard grew up in Des Moines, where he graduated from high school. He played basketball in high school and at Grand View Junior College in Des Moines. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and a master's degree from Jackson S"
